Interview with Sandilake Clothing Founder Melissa Lay
Melissa Lay – 29 years old. Stay-at-home mom, and entrepreneur. Born in Longview, WA. Some education at George Fox University. I married at age 21 to Dan Lay, my best friend. And had two kids by the time I was 27 – Scout and Penny are 5 and 3. – They are the blood that runs through this company. We live in Portland and never plan on moving. This might be the best place to be a maker and small business owner. It’s such a great city!1)
1)What is Sandilake Clothing?
A modern and unique children’s clothing company. Designed by a mom, Inspired by littles, and made for the whole family! 🙂
2) How did you come up with the idea for the Sandilake Clothing?
Most clothes for kids are sectioned into girls or boys, pink or blue. When I became a mom, I wanted to dress my little girl to reflect my style. – More outdoorsy, less frilly, more tomboy essentially. I bought a screen printer and learned how to make shirts myself!
3) What makes your company different from your competitors?
We are different from competitors because we make everything ourselves keeping our costs WAY down. Instead of keeping stock with designs, we make them after the customer orders. Our margins thank us for that! 🙂
4) How did being on Shark Tank help your business?
Being on Shark Tank taught me a ton about business, knowing your margins, and being smart. – It also reaffirmed that I am doing a lot of things right. I was worried they would pick apart my business plan, and they didn’t. – Since then our sales are through the roof, and we are taking every opportunity to have the best customer care!
5) What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Believe in yourselves…and be smart. Don’t spend your money once you start making a profit, but save it up for when you really need it. Also, ASK FOR HELP. I had a hard time in the beginning not asking others to help me or teach me a thing or two.
We would like to thank Melissa for speaking with us.
